Pigs are screamin’ as bacon obsessed Capetonians lick greedy lips in anticipation of the BaconFest SA Cape Town 2015: a faux foodie affair where on-trend denialists can revel in and trivialise the suffering of others.

Visitors are in for a real treat. Swallow humanity, embrace ignorance and disregard compassion – all for mouthful upon mouthful of bacon.

The price is R250 a ticket. But for pigs, intelligent animals with complex cognitive abilities similar to dogs, dolphins, chimpanzees, and even humans, the price is far higher and explicitly brutal.

We’ll celebrate moral apathy as we idolize bacon at SA’s favourite Pork Party, while at the same time abhorring and condemning the annual Yulin Dog Festival in China. If it’s about bacon then why bother extending the same reasoning and compassion to other animals equally as intelligent and deserving of life?
